Our desire for new scents and fragrances is far from saturated, the smell and flavour industry is constantly developing new and exciting connections. It shouldn’t just have a nice smell, but it also has to be stable, safe and affordable.

Nowadays we all want to smell nice, but in the past perfume was used for a very different purpose

Fragrance offerings
Perfume originated in Egypt some 3000 years BC.

Appearance
Perfume became very important to the Egyptians, it played a part from birth until death. They even took perfumes with them to their grave. Perfume only existed as cream, oil or powder. The Greek later developed a liquid perfume.

A treasure
In the first century AD the art of glass blowing was discovered in Syria, after which the invention of the perfume bottle quickly followed. A bottle of perfume was more valuable than jewellery.

Development
In the 19th century we learned to recreate scents from nature in a laboratory and new scents were developed. This happened in a small French village called Grasse. It is in this village where the famous fragrance Chanel No. 5 came into existence.

After this discovery the perfumes developed rapidly. More and more scents were developed and multiple flower species were combined.

France also has a history in scents. These are the two most famous fragrances from France:

Chanel No. 5
French fashion designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel created this fragrance in 1921, together with the perfumer Ernest Beaux. They called the fragrance ‘5’ because this was her favourite number. Chanel No.5 remains to this day one of the best selling perfumes worldwide. Chanel No. 5 remains to this day one of the best selling perfumes worldwide.

Miss Dior
In 1947 Christian Dior gave the order to create a scent that smelled like love. A fragrance that suited the young, elegant, joyful and especially loving woman of that time. The fragrance has been given a new look in 2011 and is now called Miss Dior Chérie.

The language of Perfume

It all comes down to the right note at the right time. It starts with a topnote, the light and usually volatile components that are released when opening a perfume bottle. It’s usually a blend of fresh fruit scents and fragrant herbal smells. Only after five to twenty minutes the heart, or body, of the scent is released. This is the character of the perfume and contains all kinds of flower scents – rose, jasmine, ylang, lily of the valley – combined with spicy scents of fruit, wood and animal origin.
